McKenny Elementary Hawk Talk

October 2017

McKenny Hawks Are Kind, Safe, Respectful and Responsible

Halloween

Halloween is upon us! Please do not send your student to school in a Halloween costume. We will call and ask you to pick them up or bring a change of clothing if they arrive in a costume.

Veterans’ Day

Thursday, November 9th at 1:15pm. Please invite the military veterans or current military personnel in your family to attend our assembly. We would love to honor your service in the armed forces.

Daylight Saving Time Ends

Fall back 1 hour on Sunday, November 5th.

Picture Retakes

Retakes have been scheduled for Thursday, November 9th. If your student is having pictures retaken, please bring in the original picture package. The photographer needs these pictures back.

No School

No school on Friday, November 10th to honor Veterans Day and also on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, November 22nd, 23rd and 24th for Thanksgiving Break.

Emergency Kits

Has your student turned in their Emergency Kit. The Safety Committee at McKenny has decided that each student should have an Emergency Kit located in their classroom at school. The following is a suggested kit: 1 bottle of water, 1 bottle of juice, 3 nonperishable foods: choice of granola bars, energy bars, fruit roll-up; items for child to use: markers or crayons and paper, book, cards; personal family comfort reminder such as a family photo or letter and 1 large garbage bag.

Think Wreaths, Think Cispus – OSDEF Holiday Wreath Sales

CISPUS Holiday Wreath sales on now! Purchase yours at McKenny to support 5th grade outdoor education. You can pre-order a beautiful wreath for your holiday décor now until November 8th. Your purchase will support overnight outdoor education in the Olympia School District. These wreaths make terrific gifts, so remember your neighbors, family and friends. Wreaths are $22.00 each, with proceeds going to assure funding for overnight environmental studies for our 5th graders, sponsored by the Olympia School District Education Foundation (OSDEF).

Wreath delivery will be the week of November 20th, details for pick up will follow soon.
Questions regarding orders and pick up? Please contact Cherie Andreassen at (360) 528-0876.

Mark your Calendars for Fifth Grade Outdoor School

Our fifth grade students will be attending Outdoor School at the Cispus Environmental Center in Randle, Washington, April 25th, 26th & 27th. This will be a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday trip. The Center has been developed specifically for student’s environmental studies and has excellent facilities for both study and research.

Cost is $150.00 per student. If you need to make payments, please call Debbie in the office to set up a payment plan. Also, if your student needs to take a prescription or over-the-counter medicine, the medicine and doctors permission form needs to be at school by Friday, April 20th

Vision & Hearing Screenings – Volunteers Needed

We are looking for volunteers for Vision and Hearing Screenings at McKenny conducted by the Lion’s Club. It is on Tuesday, December 12th beginning at 9:00am. This is for grades 1, 2, 3, and 5. Please call Debbie in the office to volunteer. Any help is appreciated! Thank you in advance.

Attendance Matters!

Research shows that consistent, on-time attendance in elementary school creates a lifelong pattern of punctuality and investment all throughout a student's school career and later for on the job. As a parent or guardian, please do everything you can to be certain your student(s) arrives on time and ready-to-learn each day. The best arrival time each morning is between 8:45 and 8:55 (There is no supervision before 8:45.)

Sending Money to School

Make sure the check or envelope is clearly marked with your child’s name, teacher’s name, amount (if cash) and indicate what the money is for (field trip, lunch, etc.) so that we can direct the check or cash to the correct person. Please send the exact amount. The office does not have petty cash to make change.

Planned Absence Request Form

Remember, if you are going on vacation or on a trip, please complete a Planned Absence Request form. These forms are available in the office or call us and we will send one home with your student.
