Walk N Roll - October 5th

Our school hosts a Walk N Roll event one day each month. These are optional days that students can bike or walk to and from school, and once they arrive, can receive special prizes (or sometimes even hot chocolate!). Please wear helmets when riding, and make sure students are crossing roads safely. Walking or biking to school is not only amazing for your health, but it is also helpful to the environment!

McKenny parent and photographer, Janice Houghton, is donating her services again to support the PTO. View this link for more information and to schedule a family photo on Friday, October 7th or Saturday, October 8th.

Read-A-Thon:

Let’s all be super readers! Use your superpowers to learn, adventure, and have fun by reading to yourself, others or having someone read to you. Your adventure starts Saturday, October 22nd and goes through Friday, November 4th. Don’t forget – have a SUPER fun time! Be on the lookout for more information about this fundraiser coming home soon.

News from Family Services:

From September 15th though October 15th we are celebrating Hispanic/Latino Heritage month. Our amazing staff have decorated the halls and shared the history of Hispanic/Latino countries during our morning announcements.

Food Bags

Starting Friday, September 30th Food Bags will be sent home every Friday with students of families that have requested them. If you would like to request a Food Bag please contact our Family Support Liaison, Charo at [email protected].

Family services frequently have kids who are in need of a snack. If you feel like donating individual packaged items please drop off at the office. Thank you!

Fall Conferences October 24th-28th
During conference week students will be released at 11:35 a.m. This is a great time for students to share with their parents what they are learning and their goals for the year. Families can register for conferences starting October 5th using Skyward Family Access.
Scholastic Book Fair October 24th - 28th
The Scholastic Book Fair will be in the school library during conference week. The book fair will also be outside on the night of the PTO Trunk or Treat. Parents and students please stop by to see all the amazing books the fair has to offer!

Principal's Corner

Hello McKenny Families!
I very much hope that you have been enjoying this summer and the beautiful weather that has come our way. At the school, we are busy gearing up for the 2022-23 school year and are really excited to begin welcoming students and families back to the building. This Hawk Talk Newsletter contains all of the important dates, times and information for upcoming events and activities.
New Staff Members:
Mark Carras is our new custodian. Mark joined us in the spring following the retirement of long-time custodian George Stadjuhar. Mark has been a custodian in the Olympia School District for many years and has already been making his “mark” at McKenny with a deep cleaning of carpets and floors and by helping us to surplus many items that have been taking up needed space for many years. This summer he has teamed up with Gerry Santos, our swing custodian, to prepare our building for students, staff and families.

April Jones has been hired as our LAP teacher. April has been teaching for 22 years and comes to us most recently from Mountain View Elementary in North Thurston. As the lead teacher in the Learning Assistance Program, Mrs. Jones will work with students and staff from all grade levels to ensure that all students are learning at the highest levels.

Staff Changes:
There is always shifting during July and August, but 2022 has seen a little less movement than usual. Mr. Sjoboen will be teaching 4th grade this year, while Mrs. Pendleton is moving back to Kindergarten to join Mrs. Shaffer and Mrs. Anderson (new to Kindergarten). In addition, long-time paraeducator Mrs. Briggs has retired and Mr. Gary has taken a position at OHS.

I’m really looking forward to seeing all of the students and families at our Ice Cream Social on September 6.
