Volunteering at McKenny

Planning to help out in your child’s class, in the library or on a field trip? Make sure you have completed a volunteer application. Update your information online if you haven’t done this for the 2018-2019 school year. It can take up to a week to get approval from the time you submit your application. To access the online application, go to the Olympia School District’s webpage (volunteer application is in the middle section of the page).  Families should go to https://www.helpcounterweb.com to sign up.

 Note from the Nurse

Our nurse is asking for a donation of new underwear and socks for the health room, especially size 6 for boys.  If you are able to pick up these items, you can drop them off in the office.  Thank you supporting our students! Also, please review the following link for more information from our nurse regarding when to keep your student home from school.

Dress for the Weather

As the weather gets cold and wet, it makes sense the students will come to school with multiple layers of clothing. In order to ensure your students, come home with the same clothes they arrived in, please make sure all coats, hoodies, gloves and hats are labeled with student names. If you provide a name, we will make sure to get clothing back to your children if they accidentally leave it behind.  With your help we could eliminate the need for a Lost and Found at school.

Let's Be Careful Out There

The days are growing shorter which means that it’s a good time to remind students, parents and community members to exercise extra caution in and around school zones, bus stops and roads that are frequently used by walkers and bikers. Reflective clothing is a good idea, especially for those students who walk or bike to school in the morning when it is dark.

Inclement Weather Conditions

Please keep the following information readily available in case you need to check if school has been cancelled or delayed due to weather or other emergency conditions.  Radio:  KGY 1240 AM or 96.9 FM; KMAS 1030 AM; KXXO 96.1 FM; and KAOS 89.3 FM.  Internet:  http://osd.wednet.edu.  Parents, please keep in mind that there is no student supervision when school starts late or is cancelled.  Web or media alerts will inform families if emergency/snow bus routes are being used.  For more information access the EMERGENCY INFORMATION link on the OSD home page at http://osd.wednet.edu.

PTO Tips for Navigating the McKenny Circle

  • Always remember to pull all the way forward to the end of the circle, if possible. Not only does this ease congestion during busy times, it also gets a few extra steps in for the kids!
  • If there is a car stopped in the beginning or middle of the circle, it’s acceptable and appreciated to drive (safely) around them and pull to the curb where there is space.
  • Remember to unlock those car doors so that students quickly exit the vehicle.
  • Remember to be aware of the traffic around you! It’s hard to keep from gazing at your student as you drive away, but keeping your eyes on the road is safest! Also, be aware of vehicles exiting the circle on your left.Be sure to check for cars before you merge into the exit.
