Volunteering at McKenny

Planning to help out in your child’s class, in the library or on a field trip? Make sure you have completed a volunteer application. Update your information online if you haven’t done this for the 2017-2018 school year. It can take up to a week to get approval from the time you submit your application. To access the online application go to the Olympia School District’s webpage (volunteer application is in the middle section of the page).  Hard copies are available if someone does not have access to a computer. Families should go to https://www.helpcounterweb.com to sign up.

Emergency Instructions for Parents

  • Make sure your contact information is accurate and updated. This ensures you’ll receive all information that we send out.
  • Make sure your child has an emergency kit for the classroom.  See the office if you need to know what to include in your emergency kit.
  • Wait for direction from the District if you need to pick up your child, and if so, when and where. You may be contacted via robo call, email, or text. Information will also be posted and updated on the District website.
  • Remember that all school staff have a role in the response, and we may not be able to answer the phones. In addition, the school phone lines need to remain open and available for emergency responders.
  • The District will advise you of the Reunification Site to pick up your child. Unless the District has advised you, do not come to the school. Parents arriving en masse will interfere with the emergency response and potentially put themselves and others in danger.
  • Reunification Sites could be located at any one of the following locations. The District will direct you to one of these sites.
  1. McKenny Elementary School
  2. LBA Park

Dress For the Weather

As the weather gets cold and wet, it makes sense the students will come to school with multiple layers of clothing. In order to ensure your students come home with the same clothes they arrived in, please make sure all coats, hoodies, gloves and hats are labeled with student names. If you provide a name, we will make sure to get clothing back to your children if they accidently leave it behind.  With your help we could eliminate the need for a Lost and Found at school.

Free Child Development Workshops

The Olympia School District is pleased to offer free child development workshops with Candyce Lund Bollinger. Bollinger is a parent educator and private parenting counselor in Washington state and has been practicing for more than 35 years. She provides classes and consultations for schools, colleges, civic groups, private organizations and has a private practice. She is the mother of four children and has two grandchildren.

Let's Be Careful Out There

The days are growing shorter which means that it’s a good time to remind students, parents and community members to exercise extra caution in and around school zones, bus stops and roads that are frequently used by walkers and bikers. Reflective clothing is a good idea, especially for those students who walk or bike to school in the morning when it is dark.

Inclement Weather Conditions

Please keep the following information readily available in case you need to check if school has been cancelled or delayed due to weather or other emergency conditions.  Radio:  KGY 1240 AM or 96.9 FM; KMAS 1030 AM; KXXO 96.1 FM; and KAOS 89.3 FM.  Internet:  http://osd.wednet.edu.  Parents, please keep in mind that there is no student supervision when school starts late or is cancelled.  Web or media alerts will inform families if emergency/snow bus routes are being used.  For more information access the EMERGENCY INFORMATION link on the OSD home page at http://osd.wednet.edu.

Tips for Navigating the McKenny Circle

  • Always remember to pull all the way forward to the end of the circle, if possible.  Not only does this ease congestion during busy times, it also gets a few extra steps in for the kids!
  • If there is a car stopped in the beginning or middle of the circle, it’s acceptable and appreciated to drive (safely) around them and pull to the curb where there is space.
  • Remember to unlock those car doors so Mrs. Stewart can open the door quickly and assist your student from exiting the vehicle.
  • Remember to be aware of the traffic around you!  It’s hard to keep from gazing at your student as you drive away, but keeping your eyes on the road is safest!  Also, be aware of vehicles exiting the circle on your left.  Be sure to check for cars before you merge into the exit.

Movie Night!

Our next movie night will be Friday, December 8th.  Movie Night is $5 for the first student and $4 for each additional student. Doors open at 6:00pm and the movie begins at 6:30pm. Price includes an intermission popcorn snack, drink and licorice!

Supervision is provided – but we’d love some company.  Parents who stay to help supervise earn a coupon for free admission to an upcoming Movie Night.  We wouldn’t be able to do this without wonderful parent volunteers who make movie nights a success.  Please consider staying to help out and enjoy the movie.  Movie night flyers and sign up information will be coming home. Please complete and return your registration form by the deadline date on the flyer.

McKenny Masquerade Success

The McKenny Masquerade was a success! Thank you to everyone who contributed help, supplies, and bake sale items.  We have a great PTO, but it’s not possible to pull off a successful event without the help of our parents!! A great big thank you to our Fall Social chair, Brandi Gish and the entire planning committee!
